Fall is coming to an end

The Fall season is coming to an end over here. Not so much temperature wise, because we still have fairly nice temperatures, but nature wise. Most trees have now lost their leaves and are looking pretty dead. I’m hoping for some snow for the month of December by the way, because it’s always nice to have photos of a white wedding. We’ll see what happens.

Here are some photos from the first week of November when we took our little ones out for a walk through our, then still colorful, neighbourhood park.

Great Light

The best time of day to make good photos is around sunrise and around sunset. Why, because of the light. The light color is beautiful, the intensity is not too high and the direction is very pronounced.

When you look at great photographs, true pieces of art, very often they were taken in great light. I know of wedding photographers that only do a photoshoot around sunrise or sunset because they know that only in the best light they can reach the quality level they are aiming for. I wouldn’t go so far myself, but I think it is definetely worth considering to move the time of your wedding photoshoot to get the best possible light of the day to take photos in.

Ella the Explorer

The giggling little snot nosed girl that you see above, that’s my daughter Ella. The somewhat fuzzy spots in the photo, those are the marks left on the lens by her greasy little fingers.

One of Ella’s favorite cartoon figures is Dora the Explorer. Fitting, because Ella is quite the explorer herself. The content of none of our closets is safe for her, and the lens of my camera will be greasy in no time if I don’t pay attention.

Below is a little report of a couple of minutes (!) of exploring with Ella. Playing with mommy’s phone, opening and closing the patio door, trying to find out how to review photos on daddy’s camera, fiddling with the ceiling fan and light switches, and checking if her favorite pair of pajama’s came out of the wash correctly. Just a few moments of exploration in the life of our little girl.

Face painting

A good friend of Melissa’s, Judith, is really good at face painting. In fact, you can hire her to do face painting at children’s parties and other fun events. She is also very good with kids by the way, that’s another talent of hers.

She asked me a while ago if I wanted to take some photos for her website, called My Imagination. I was of course happy to help her out. My kids especially liked it because they got to be the recipients of Judith’s face painting talents.

Cell phone photos

I don’t really use my cell phone camera that much, so I don’t remember to transfer the photos to my PC very often. Yesterday I remembered though and I found a couple of nice photos that I want to share with you. There are all sorts of different photos here really: a self portrait in my car, my kids, a sunset, a nice tree, a beautiful sunset and an interesting reflection in a big puddle of water. It’s kind of a mini year in review really.

Ella is sleeping

Ella is such a little doll. She is at this age where she is almost always very sweet, except when she is really tired, then she gets a bit cranky. Luckily there’s a good remedy for this: sleep.

A Sunny Fall Day

Two weeks ago I was at the castle in Geldrop with my family. We were very lucky to be there on a beautiful sunny day. When the sun shines at this time of year you automatically have great light for photography. I hope winter starts late this year.

Yee Haw

Ella likes boots. She doesn’t like cowgirl boots, she likes rain boots. Not that there’s anything wrong with cowgirl boots. In fact, I don’t think Ella has ever seen any in her short life time. She’d probably like them if she saw them. But anyway, she likes rain boots, especially her big sister’s. She’ll wear them and walk around giggling and laughing.

In this photo she is actually pretending to be a cowgirl on a horse. A cowgirl with rain boots, that is.

The playground

A couple of weeks ago I was editing photo’s of a wedding when Melissa called. She asked if I could come over to the playground to help watch the kids. Now you have to understand that I was “in the zone”. But, I’m not someone to say no very easily to someone who needs help, especially when it’s Melissa doing the asking. So, because I didn’t want to stop thinking about photography all together I grabbed my camera and my telephoto lens and bicycled over to the playground. Luckily the late afternoon sun peeked in now and then so I could take some nice photos here and there, while I was making sure that the kids weren’t getting themselves into trouble.

The first photo is of Ella. I like the composition in this photo, with the circle.

Here’s Kailea at the cable swing, she really liked this thing.

Here are a couple of photos of Lorelei, the daughter of friends of ours. She is really cute. When she smiles she pulls up her nose in this funny way.

I like this photo because of the beautiful color and diffuseness of the light. Of course the background is also perfectly out of focus.

This final photo is mostly very special because it was taken when Lorelei came down on the cable rope at full speed together with her mom. But, you can’t tell from looking at her face. She is completely calm.

Siembra

Two weeks ago Melissa gave birth to a little girl . Her name is Siembra (see-em-bra). After having spend a week in the hospital she is now with us again at home. Here are two photos of our new little girl.
