Fall is coming to an end

The Fall season is coming to an end over here. Not so much temperature wise, because we still have fairly nice temperatures, but nature wise. Most trees have now lost their leaves and are looking pretty dead. I’m hoping for some snow for the month of December by the way, because it’s always nice to have photos of a white wedding. We’ll see what happens.

Here are some photos from the first week of November when we took our little ones out for a walk through our, then still colorful, neighbourhood park.

The old tower of Nederwetten

Close to the little village of Nederwetten, a little bit east of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, we find an interesting church tower. The tower is situated in the middle of a farmer’s field, next to the river Dommel and a farm, about 500 meters (a quarter of a mile) away from the edge of the village. When I first saw the tower I wondered about the story behind this tower. I wasn’t able to find that much information on it but this is what I did find out.

The tower used to be part of a complete church building that was built during the 15th century in the then new town center of Nederwetten. Over the years the town moved westward, and in 1895 a new church was built there. This was good for the people of the town because they didn’t have to walk as far to church anymore, but it was not so nice for the little old church because it was torn down; except for the tower, which was left in it’s place. The current shape of the tower was determined in 1938 when the tower lost its steeple during a violent storm.

And now, about 500 years after it was built, the tower still stands, no longer in the middle of town but in the middle of a field.

A Sunny Fall Day

Two weeks ago I was at the castle in Geldrop with my family. We were very lucky to be there on a beautiful sunny day. When the sun shines at this time of year you automatically have great light for photography. I hope winter starts late this year.

A big park, all to ourselves

We went for a family walk the other day in a somewhat secluded park called the Philips van Lenneppark, here in Eindhoven. This park is on the edge of town. For some reason it is not a very popular park. Even though it is very beautiful and quiet. It also has nice toys for kids to play and a very cool petting zoo. I guess the location gives it a disadvantage, but we sure like going there.

Here is a photo of our girls, looking at the birds on the grass. I like this photo because it shows Kailea and Ella together, interacting. Ella is really starting to turn from a baby into a little toddler, and because of that Kailea and her are starting to play together more and really becoming friends.

Four Seasons

After Autumn, Winter en Spring I now took the Summer photo in the Philips de Jongh Park (in Eindhoven). I took a photo in all four seasons, at the same place, at a moment in time when I thought that the season was best represented. It all started in the Fall when I thought “he, that’s a good looking forest lane with those yellow leaves”. And now the cycle is complete. A nice reminder that there’s some thing beautifull to see in every season.

Flashback Friday – Sunrise

Last year we were on vacation in a beautiful villa on the Spanish East Coast. We had a very nice view over the Mediterranean. One of the nice things about the East Coast, of any country, is that you can see the sun rise over the sea or ocean. At least, that’s what I thought. In our case it turned out that the village where we were staying was on the corner of a peninsula, which made it that the sun rose over land, and not above the sea. I found this out when I woke up early one morning to photograph the sunrise. So, not exactly what I expected. But luckily a sunrise looks good pretty much everywhere you are, over land or over sea.

“Excuse me, do you mind if I take a photo with you in it?” The elderly Asian man turned towards me and doubtingly said “well… I’d rather that you don’t”. “I’ll make it so you won’t be recognizable. Let me make a photo and then I’ll show you what it looks like.” I said. “OK” he said while he turned back away from me to continue his fly fishing.

I positioned myself and waited for all the elements to come together. And when they did, “click”.

I walked back over to the fisherman and showed him the result. He nodded approvingly and said “how do you do that?”

Spring is out of Focus

Spring here in the Netherlands is a strange season. Today was one of those spring days that I don’t really like. I know, everything is so green over here because we have a good combination of rain and sunshine, but I feel a lot better when the sun is shining. To me, spring is a sunny season, when the bad weather is over. But today was not such a day. Today, spring was out of focus.
