I like photos where the subject is in focus and the background is very much out of focus. To make a photo like that you need a lens that has a small depth of field. I regularly use the dofmaster website to make a table of the depth of field at a certain focal length and aperture. By looking at the table I can get a somewhat of a feeling for the possibilities of a certain lens without actually having used it in a certain situation.
